Default just pulled my engine out with the wife handing me tools...

i was in a pinch this past august when i was heading out to gumball and had to put a clutch in the day it was starting that could handle the power that kevin has granted me with and the only thing that filled the bill and was sitting on the shelf was a 4 puck non sprung motorsport clutch...

it held the power but it is the epitome of on and off, much like a woman!

anyway, after my saga with the dealership doing all of my previous work and it not ending up as it should, it was the usual mud sling where they would point the finger at the machine shop/parts manufacturers and vice versa with me paying the bill 2x's, i decided to go at it on my own...againg kevins better judgment of coarse.

but with kevins, carrys(erp), and akrams(pmechanic in houston) gracious guidance over the phone, pelican parts(pet diagrams), and my wifes help 6 hours latter it was out. i am going to try and make a DIY as i could not find ANY materials on R&R'in the clutch in or out of the car.

these are a few pics, enjoy and merry christmas!

Greetings tradin1:

In the next couple of months, i will need to remove the engine to possibly replace a variocam unit at the intake camshafts. Have you completed a do-it-yourselfer set of instruccions to remove the engine? I have the Porsche shop repair manual but the information provided doesn't make me that comfortable on performing the job. I need something a little bit on the DIY side than a Porsche shop block of instruccions. I would appreciate your help.

Thanks, Andres

Andres,

Are you planning on taking the engine to a Porsche repair shop for the vario-cam replacement? This is NOT a job for the home mechanic. The tools and locks that are required cost thousands of dollars to do this job. In the long run it would be easier and cheaper to find a Porsche mechanic.

Greetings Kevin:

As a matter of fact I do intend to fix the variocam issue myself. I really appreciate your concern since it is a good faith recommendation. However, I do feel confident on doing this type of job. I have available the Porsche shop repair manual and I am pretty mechanically inclined. I also know that there are a few special tools that are needed to complete the job which I have already identified. And i know for a fact that I will not spend more than $1,600 on them. Unfortunatley, here in Puerto Rico the few Porsche mechanics around think that all the people with Porches are rich individuals that can pay whatever is needed to fix their car. And this is definetly not my case. They have quote me $1800 just for removing the engine. And probably for around $2000 with the needed parts i could have the car running in tip-top conditions again. Since I have never removed one of these engines before, I need some basic guidance on how to do it. But after that, I can easily carry on.

Best regards, Andres
